Since her participation in the 2009 Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) program, Romero has won three education grant awards and hosted three US teachers at her school in Montería, Colombia. Now, she is receiving national recognition. Earlier this year, the Colombian government awarded Romero first prize for the country-wide Public Youth Day competition. Romero based her award-winning teaching proposal around the TEA grants she received.
“Before the TEA program, I did not know what I could do,” Yanilis Romero said. “[My first project] just came to me weeks after I finished the program. After you see that you can change something in your community, [you realize] you have the power to impact other people’s lives.”
